RAMBLING AND RANDONEES AT LE PETIT ROC

From the doorway of Le Petit Roc you can follow a “chemin blanc” (non paved country lane) and quickly pick up a “sentier” (marked walk) of between 4 and 15 kilometres, normally circular routes, which explore the unspoilt countryside of Sud Charente, with its clean air and limited traffic. In this corner of Charente where the Dordogne and Gironde regions also meet, you will find rolling hills, beautiful valleys and forest rich in birds and animals. It is fertile countryside and you are never far from a stream or river, nor from the hamlets and villages which often boast fine examples of the Romanesque churches for which Poitou Charente is famous.

These local walkways link in with departmental routes, with one of the three “sentiers vers Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle” which lead south from Tours and which passes through Angouleme and then down into sud Charente, via Montmoreau and Aubeterre, and with the GR(Grande Randonnée) National Routes which criss cross France. This richness of routes allows you to choose long circular walks which might include lunch in the beautiful river village of Aubeterre if you head east towards the Dordogne, or the “cuisine paysanne” Chez Poirier in Bardenac if you head west. The walking maps issued by the Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre are excellent in their detail (1/25 000), and the sentiers are well marked. The majority of the walks are Grade 1 easy walking, with high gradients at a minimum.

Out of high season we can help you organise a four day, or week long, itinerary of walking, including airport transfers, maps and other local advice, pick up and drop offs if you wish to walk linear routes, and we’ll even bring you your lunchtime picnic if  desired! Après march might be a simple glass of wine, feet up, in the sun, or a visit to St.Aulaye for a massage and hamman. In high season you can still enjoy the local walking and we will provide as much help as possible with your plans.
